Choosing your call setup

Voicemail or an AI receptionist: which fits your grooming business?

Voicemail and an AI receptionist both give callers an option when you cannot pick up. The difference is the conversation and the work left for your team afterward. Choose based on the calls you receive, the information you need and how your staff actually follows up.

What voicemail does well

A familiar greeting and a recorded message can be enough for a business with a small number of missed calls and a reliable callback routine. Your team listens to the customer's own words and decides how to respond. There is no conversational agent to configure.

The tradeoff is that the message may leave out a callback number, requested time or the reason for calling. You may need another exchange to understand the request. Before changing tools, check whether a clearer voicemail greeting and a consistent review routine would solve your actual problem.

What Spikey adds to the handoff

Spikey answers inbound calls forwarded to its dedicated number. The AI assistant can use your business instructions and collect a brief callback request. The resulting call information and follow-up appear in the dashboard for your team to review.

The Calls page emphasizes requests that still need action, with conversation details available when needed. A connected calendar can add availability context. AI summaries can still be incomplete or mistaken, so your team should check uncertain details before promising a price, appointment or other outcome.

Compare the work, not just the greeting

Use a typical caller as your test: someone wants a full groom on Friday afternoon. With either option, ask whether the team can identify the request, reach the customer and decide what happens next. In Spikey, a captured appointment request still requires your team to check the current schedule and confirm the booking.

Include setup and running costs in your decision. Spikey requires an active plan, a dedicated number and working call forwarding. Monthly plans include an allowance of minutes, with extra usage charged at the listed rate. Your carrier may also charge for forwarded calls.

Keep the caller's choice visible

An AI conversation involves processing by the service and its providers, with transcripts and summaries saved for the business. Read the privacy information, explain the experience accurately and keep your public non-AI contact method up to date. Avoid asking callers to share payment details or sensitive personal information.

You can test the workflow before deciding how widely to use it. Try an unanswered call, a routine service question and an appointment request from a second phone. Review the resulting records and confirm that your team can follow up comfortably.

Common questions

Is an AI receptionist the same as a live receptionist?

No. Spikey identifies itself as AI and works from your instructions and available tools. It does not replace a person's judgment or provide a staffed escalation desk. Your team remains responsible for customer follow-up and confirmed arrangements.

Does AI answering guarantee more bookings?

No. Capturing a request gives your team an opportunity to follow up, but outcomes depend on your availability, services and response. Spikey does not guarantee that a missed call becomes a booking or automatically create appointments.

Can I return to ordinary voicemail?

Yes, by restoring your previous routing with your carrier or phone-system administrator. Save those settings before making changes, then test the result. Pausing AI answering alone does not restore your carrier's voicemail.
